This wedding portrait session was held at the exclusive Conestoga House and Gardens, a Mediterranean inspired wedding venue with an Italian Flare and a history of very mysterious and eccentric tenants. Louise McClure (Tinsley) Steinman purchased it from Christian Hershey in 1927 and began some renovations to modernize the once-tavern. Her most interesting renovation involved the addition of the Italian “aranciera” or, “orangery.” While on one of her extravagant European trips, Louise fell in love with the indoor greenhouses where citrus plants were raised and began plans to add a smaller version of these enchanting rooms into the Estate.
While on vacation in Eurpope, as Louise was strolling down the Italian roadside, she noticed construction workers tearing down a building and they seemed to be tossing out massive chunks of marble. Louise stopped to chat and asked what they were doing, and the workers confirmed that they were, in fact, throwing away an ancient marble checkered floor as construction waste.
Louise was horrified that they would throw away something so lovely and she immediately purchased the waste from them and had it shipped across the ocean to her home, where she erected her own “aranciera” or, “orangery.”
